Hi! I came across your site whilst googling 'The Grey Ladies' to see if my Dad's poem had been published. Your site came out top of the pops. Dad has never been far away since he died in 1987 and one of my sisters, I have 3, feels especially close to him. I thought you might like to read the poem, so here it is!
The Grey Ladies The tall silver birches bow before the wind Like ancient grey ladies in a mediaeval court, Delicate lace veils encircling their filigree faces. They bow and curtsy and sway with emotion, Fluttering their fans in eager anticipation, For the North Wind, Lord of the Snows, approaches, Sending before him his harbingers, The great grey storm clouds in their fringed mantles. It is a year and a day since last he came, They have donned their delicate gowns of green And danced with Pan in the early morn. They have danced in the Spring Wind blowing from the Western seas. They have stood motionless and solemn in the August nights When the Queen of the Night swept by in austere purity. But now they prepare to meet their tempestuous Lord Who will draw them gasping and trembling in his mad dance, And love them in a wild embrace. He comes with his white cloak swirling about him, Furiously thrashing this way and that Until it covers them and they lie quiet in his arms. Now all is darkness, and no sound is heard Save their love song in the high branches. In the morning the dance will be over. They will stand still and desolate in their grey veils, While about their feet his cloak still lies Like a white carpet, pure and unsullied. Save where the tears drop, large and heavy, from their eyes. For the Lord of the Snows will have gone; He has held them in his arms; They have had their mad brief hour of joy, And now they are alone, the stately grey Ladies, the silver birches. Cyril W. Block

a very interesting site, Maybe one day i will visit the Scottish borders, I hear sounds and sometimes see shadows, moreso now that i am 67 years of age.
